(1957-1966)
Entering its second decade, the Whitfield County Community
Chest continued to be strictly a volunteer organization. Committed
community leaders managed allocations and fund raising, and
maintained record and continuity to improve services in our
area.
1957
Joe Ginsberg and R.E. Hamilton were
campaign chairmen with a goal of $69,000. According to information
furnished
United Community Fund and Councils of America $66,000 was obtained
with the balance to come in from the final clean-up effort.
Added to the Board of Directors that year were G.L.
Westcott,
Robert Hamilton, M.E. Kellar, Carl
Berry and Frank Conner.
1958

records failed to disclose final results but, according to
treasurer’s report of December 8, 1960, $67,176 had been
paid in at that point.

and was over-subscribed by several hundred dollars.

A goal of
$75,000 was set for the campaign held in 1962, Ninety-six and
three tenths percent of the goal was obtained at the time of
reporting to United
Community
Funds and Councils of America.
1963

A year-round office was established
and Mrs. J.M. "Harriett" McFerrin
was employed as full time director.
Serving as campaign chairman that year was Clifford
Hale. The
goal was $78,000 and it was
over-subscribed by $2,300.

The goal for the 1964 campaign was $92,000. W.K. Inman and
Robert E. Rutland served as chairman and vice chairman and
recorded an all-time high of $96,135.
Also in 1964
A new constitution was adopted setting forth
in Article I - Name: "The name of this organization as
chartered is Whitfield Community Chest, Inc., but for fundraising
purposes it shall do business as the United Appeal
of Whitfield County."

Robert E. Rutland and James D. Miller, Jr. were chairman and
vice chairman of the campaign in 1965 with a goal of $98,000.
Results obtained were 99.6%.
1966
In the 1966 campaign, the goal was for the first time in excess
of $100,000, being set at $103,000. Under the able leadership
of James D. Miller, Jr. and Norris
Little, the goal was over-subscribed
by $3,000.
The Whitfield County Community Chest, as does our United Way,
always maintains an open door policy, welcoming the application
for admission of any agency which meets the prescribed standards.
By the end of the second decade of the Whitfield County
Community Chest/United Appeal, funds were supporting ten local agencies:

Northwest Georgia Area Council of the Boy Scouts,

Cheerhaven,

the emergency assistance program of Family & Children’s
Services,

North Georgia Girl Scouts,

Hi-Y and Tri-Hi-Y Clubs,

a juvenile court program,

the Whitfield County Mental Health
Association,

Red Cross - Murray and Whitfield County chapters

the Salvation Army.
