Martin Luther King Jr. National Day of Service

Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service celebrates the Civil Rights leader’s life and legacy through service. Observed each year on the third Monday in January as “a day on, not a day off,” MLK Day is one of only two federal holidays designated as a national day of service to encourage all Americans to volunteer to improve their communities.

MLK, Jr. Day isn’t for rest and relaxation, as tempting as that might sound. It’s a national day of service—a time set aside for volunteerism, for following Dr. King’s example, for doing what’s right

Among Dr. King’s many inspirational quotes is this simple one: “Everybody can be great because anybody can serve.” Can you spend a few of your free hours in service this MLK Jr. Day? United Way of Northwest Georgia has opportunities for you that you can do the week of MLK Jr. Day.

We must all do our part, working United, to make our community a place where everyone has the resources, opportunities, and support they need to thrive.

As you make plans for your day off, consider this. How would you answer what King said was life’s most urgent and persistent question: What are you doing to help others?

To that end, we are calling on you to join us in volunteering and serving in Northwest Georgia. On Martin Luther King Jr. Day—a National Day of Service—join United Way of Northwest Georgia in honoring Dr. King’s legacy as a volunteer and serving your community.
