Every November, for National Family Caregivers Month, we recognize and honor family caregivers, raise awareness of caregiving issues, educate communities, and increase support for caregivers.

Becoming a caregiver is an important and taxing job that requires an adjustment period. AARP has a few tips to help you navigate your caregiver journey.

Understand your role
It is important to take the time to learn what your loved ones need and what will be required from you as their caregiver. Understanding your role and responsibilities will help you transition into this new phase.

Organization is key
Being a caregiver requires you to manage your daily life and your loved ones, no matter their situation. Therefore, organization is key. A daily schedule can help ensure medication administration, nutrition, and required therapies are performed on time. This can also help you take control and relieve unnecessary stress.

Ask for help
Whether you have questions for healthcare professionals, need an extra set of hands, or need relief, don’t wait until you’re feeling overwhelmed. Ask family and friends about sharing caregiving responsibilities and explore local resources that provide relief. Visit AARP’s caregiving resource page with local information.

You matter, too.
Don't forget about yourself while adjusting to your new life as a caregiver. Safeguard your health first. Eating healthy, getting adequate sleep, and maintaining an exercise routine will help you stay mentally and physically resilient. Consider joining a caregiver support group to connect with others for advice and tips. AARP can help you find a local one.

It’s normal to feel nervous and worried about your new role. Be patient; caregiving is a learning experience that takes time for you and your loved one. And while being a caregiver can be challenging, it can also be a rewarding experience.
