Celebrating Mother’s Day, we honor the women who shape our lives through compassion, courage, and love. Mothers, grandmothers, teachers, mentors, and friends—these women nurture not just families but entire communities, guiding others with strength and grace. This month is about celebrating the power of women who lead with their hearts and lift others along the way.
This loving and nurturing spirit was beautifully reflected at our third annual Power of the Purse event on April 30 at Walnut Hill Farm. With blue skies above and spring in full bloom, more than 300 local women came together to connect, laugh, and leave inspired. It was a day filled with joy and purpose. Thanks to our generous sponsors, donors, and guests, we raised critical funds to support United Way’s literacy efforts, Community Partners, and other programs that are transforming lives.
One of the most memorable parts of the day was hearing from our keynote speaker, Dr. Lisa Sponcler Norman—a Dalton native, mom of four, and author of the Ellie Asks children’s book series. Dr. Lisa spoke with warmth and authenticity about the importance of instilling virtues like love, joy, respect, and gratitude in our children. Her stories reminded us that these values begin at home and are nurtured in classrooms, on playgrounds, and in everyday acts of care and courage.
Through her books, Lisa empowers young minds to ask bold questions and lead with compassion—just as so many mothers and mentors do every day. Her message was a powerful reminder that when we teach our children to value themselves and others, we lay the foundation for a brighter, more connected future.
Whether we’re thanking a teacher during National Teacher Appreciation Week or celebrating a mother’s unwavering love, May gives us countless reasons to reflect on the difference women make. United Way is proud to walk alongside these changemakers—through Women’s Leadership Council, literacy programs, and community initiatives that uplift every generation.
To every woman showing up, reaching out, and lighting the way for others: we see you, we thank you, and we celebrate you. Take some time to relax and enjoy a day in your honor. Happy Mother’s Day.
