Every Child. Every Opportunity.
The Basics movement is built on a simple but powerful idea: when every adult supports every child with strong, everyday interactions, children can thrive, starting from birth. Grounded in early childhood development research, The Basics are five science-based principles that help parents and caregivers nurture social, emotional, and cognitive growth in children from birth to age five.
why it matters
During the first three years of life, 80% of brain development occurs. Yet, many families may not have access to the tools and information needed to make the most of this critical window. Without support, opportunities to build strong foundations in language, learning, and relationships can be missed.
united way's role
We work with local partners to share The Basics broadly, through schools, health providers, community centers, and other organizations, ensuring families have access to the guidance, tools, and encouragement they need. Together, we’re making a way for every caregiver to confidently support their child’s development, using simple, everyday moments.
The Basics Principles
Maximizing love and managing stress helps caregivers stay emotionally present with their children. Consistent, nurturing relationships and freedom from excessive stress promote children’s development and emotional wellbeing.
Talking, singing, and pointing accelerate language development, which in turn accelerates children’s early learning and engagement with the surrounding world.
Counting, grouping, and comparing lay the foundations for mathematical thinking, helping children make sense of the numbers and categories they encounter in the world.
Exploring through movement and play encourages curiosity, exploration, and discovery, and supports the development of motor skills and a healthy body.
Reading and discussing stories engages children in thinking and builds their knowledge, reasoning, and early literacy skills.
