Keep Kids Thriving This Summer with United Way

School’s out, but learning does not have to stop! At United Way, we are working hard to make sure kids in Whitfield and Murray counties stay engaged, curious, and on track for success this summer.

Our Keep Kids Thriving program, part of our year-round Read United initiative, helps children fight the “summer slide”—the learning loss that can happen when school takes a break. Research shows that this slide can cause two-thirds of the reading gap between low—and middle-income students by ninth grade. But we are here to change that!

With the help of our partners—Dalton Public Schools, Chatsworth-Murray County Library, and Whitfield County Schools—we deliver free books, fun activities, and caring volunteers straight to school lunch sites each week. Kids get to choose books to keep, building home libraries and a love for reading.

Our Little Free Libraries are in every local park, some of our community partners, and local schools. These offer 24/7 access to books for the whole family. It is a simple way to share books and community spirit. Visit ourunitedway.org/little-free-libraries for locations.

We are also celebrating the launch of our Youth United Council Class of 2026, a group of 33 outstanding students from area high schools. With leadership training from the University of Georgia’s J.W. Fanning Institute, these teens are learning to lead and serve right here at home. Together, we are shaping a future where empowered youth gain the skills and opportunities they need to thrive in the workforce, creating stronger, more vibrant communities.

At United Way, 26% of our funding goes toward youth and education. From kindergarten readiness to career prep, we are helping build a stronger community—one book, one student, one future at a time. Successful foundations start here.

Want to help? Here’s how:
