What is Mentors United?
Mentors United is a school-based mentoring program that connects caring adult volunteers (“Big Buddies”) with middle school students (“Littles”) who can benefit from extra encouragement and support. Through a partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters, members of United Way’s Young Leaders Society serve as the Big Buddies—building consistent, positive relationships with students throughout the school year.
By showing up, listening, and leading by example, these mentors provide guidance, friendship, and a trusted presence—helping students grow in confidence, character, and connection both inside and outside the classroom.

Mentorship Matters
Research shows that young people with a mentor are more likely to succeed academically, build healthy relationships, and avoid risky behaviors. A strong, consistent mentor can increase school attendance, improve self-confidence, and reduce the likelihood of substance use or involvement in negative peer groups.
Through United Way’s investment in youth programs like Mentors United, we are strengthening protective factors in a child’s life—supportive adults, positive role models, and stable connections. By keeping students engaged, supported, and encouraged, we help set them on a path toward graduation, leadership, and long-term success.
