A Legacy Built Together

United Way Celebrates 30 Years of Tocqueville and 10 Years of Peacock Legacy

An evening honoring generations of generosity, leadership, and commitment to Northwest Georgia.

On October 15, 2026, United Way of Northwest Georgia gathered with longtime supporters, community leaders, and friends at The Farm Golf Club to celebrate two remarkable milestones: the 30th anniversary of the Tocqueville Society and the 10th anniversary of the Peacock Legacy.

The evening was more than a celebration of anniversaries. It was an opportunity to honor those who helped shape United Way's history, recognize the difference being made in Whitfield and Murray counties today, and look ahead to the legacy we will build together.

Honoring the Past

In 1996, 23 founding members came together with a shared belief that extraordinary generosity could create lasting change in Northwest Georgia.

Under the leadership of founding Chairman Julian Saul, the Tocqueville Society established a tradition of philanthropic leadership that continues three decades later. Bob Shaw made the Society's first contribution, helping set in motion a legacy of generosity that has continued through generations of community leaders.

During the celebration, United Way President Amanda Burt reflected on the Society's beginnings, honored its founding members, and recognized those whose vision and commitment helped lay the foundation for the organization we know today.

The evening also commemorated 10 years of the Peacock Legacy Society, celebrating individuals and families who have made a commitment to the long-term strength and well-being of Northwest Georgia.

Celebrating the Present

Matthew Moore, Vice Chair of United Way's Board of Directors, shared a personal reflection on how the spirit of service and philanthropy can carry from one generation to the next.

His grandfather, Harry Moore, chaired United Way's annual campaign in 1961. Years later, Matthew became involved through United Way's Young Leaders Society, where firsthand experiences with local nonprofit partners deepened his understanding of the needs within his hometown.

That experience inspired years of volunteer leadership, including serving as Board Chair in 2017. In 2027, Matthew will once again serve as Board Chair, continuing a family connection to United Way that spans more than six decades.

His story was a reminder that generosity is about more than what we give. It is also about the example we set and the people we inspire along the way.

Today, United Way continues to bring people and resources together to create meaningful change through four areas of impact: Youth Opportunity, Financial Security, Healthy Community, and Community Resiliency.

Inspiring the Future

Looking ahead, Bryan and Debbie Macon, Co-Chairs of the Peacock Legacy Foundation, shared their vision for ensuring that the generosity of today continues to strengthen Northwest Georgia for generations to come.

The Peacock Legacy Foundation represents a commitment to building lasting resources that will help United Way respond to the needs of our community, both those we recognize today and those we cannot yet imagine.

Through thoughtful planning and a shared commitment to the future, the Foundation offers an opportunity for individuals and families to create a lasting impact that extends well beyond their lifetimes.

While we cannot predict what Northwest Georgia will look like decades from now, we can help ensure future generations have the resources and opportunities to build a stronger community.

A Legacy Built Together

The evening concluded with a special toast from Joe and Will Young, grandsons of Bob Shaw and current members of United Way's Board of Directors.

Their participation brought the celebration full circle, connecting the generosity that helped establish the Tocqueville Society 30 years ago with a new generation of leaders carrying that commitment forward.

As we reflect on these milestones, we are reminded that United Way's story has never been about one person or one moment. It is a story of generations coming together, each contributing to something greater than themselves.

Some laid the foundation. Some carried the work forward. And some are just beginning.

To every donor, volunteer, board member, and community partner who has been part of this journey, thank you for helping build a legacy that continues to strengthen Northwest Georgia.

Together, we are building what comes next.
